| In a recent survey, acne topped the list of beauty calamities, annoying respondents more than lines and wrinkles, or even a haircut gone badly.
Acne, although mostly affecting teens, can occur at any age. Acne can happen on the face, neck and back.
How to treat? First, try over-the-counter acne solutions containing salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.
Benzoyl peroxide is the most commonly used acne treatment and is known as one of the most potent ones in the market. If you are suffering from mild forms of acne that is non-inflammatory, benzoyl peroxide is regarded as very potent.
Nevertheless, there are several minor side effects. It can bring on dryness in the skin. If you feel too much dryness, stop applying the treatment for a while and then, using a lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide, try again.
Salicylic acid works best of all on acne that is non-inflamed and it begins by removing the dead skin, thus keeping the skin pores pour and precluding blocking. But skin irritation is possible. At times patients complain of a stinging or burning feeling, flaking or peeking skin and dryness.
If there are no visible results in a few weeks, talk to your family physician about prescription acne treatments, such as antibiotics, retinoids and adapalene (Differin).
There are several antibiotics that are prescribed by doctors as acne treatments for patients who suffer from moderate or severe cases of ance. Antibiotics prevent bacteria from multiplying and spreading in the body. Even though they show results quicker, antibiotics are commonly not preferred by patients, as they trigger side effects, such as dyspepsia, discoloration of the skin, giddiness and sensitivity to light.
If your skin is severely affected by cysts, your medical practitioner may recommend isotretinoin (Accutane) or may refer you to a dermatologist. Since grave side effects are possible, men and women administering Accutane should be cautiously monitored by their doctors. If other acne treatments appear inefficient, laser or light therapy may be used.
